Dr Abigail Abbott - Veterinary Intern (Rotating)
Dr Abigail Abbott BSc (Hons) MSc BVetMed MCRVS Veterinary Intern (Rotating)

Abigail chose to become a vet to provide exceptional standard of care to those companion animals we hold so dear. Coming straight out of Vet School, she knew that a rotating internship would be an invaluable next step to build on her clinical skills and knowledge, learning from the best specialists in their field. Abigail is using this opportunity to determine which surgical specialty she enjoys the most and wants to dedicate her career to pursuing.

A day in the life:

“I start the day off early, try to get some movement in, sometimes running with my dog Ted. Then at HSR I’ll check on the overnight patients and get a handover from the night team. Discuss any plans or imminent needs with the specialists. Team rounds give us an overview of the day and what surgeries/procedures and consultations we have booked. Mornings are usually filled with consults and the afternoon going into elective or emergency surgeries depending on the patients’ needs. Ending the day with patients all stabilised and settled in their kennels and handing them over to the night team to look after.”

Most Memorable Case:

“An adorable young shih tzu with burns all along her back from being accidentally scolded. She was admitted for continued wound management and care. She was clearly in a lot discomfort and didn’t want people handling her. It took over a week of care until she came out of her shell and show us her personality which was very sweet. Once the wound was ready, our exceptional soft tissue surgeon Dr Karla Lee closed the wound and the patient left the hospital as a playful puppy again.”

In her free time, Abigail enjoys running trails with her golden retriever, Ted, and perfecting her sourdough recipes, which are always taste-tested by her Bernese mountain dog, Winnie. Abigail loves to travel, especially to the US to visit family and friends in Louisiana, which is where she grew up. Abigail has a strong interest in surgery and her research focuses on assessing surgical approaches and the difference in patient outcomes.
